"Australian communities are vulnerable to a number of national hazards. Bushfires account for an annual average cost of about $77 million and for the most fatalities. From 1900 to 2008, Australian bushfires caused 552 deaths. Then, on 7 February 2009, Black Saturday, several large fires broke out across Victoria, killing 173 people. These fires were precipitated by a heatwave across southern Australia."
